Membrane 1r. Preamble: letters patent, writs of assize and gaol delivery commission.

1. John Adam of Ely, baker, is indicted that on 24 Oct. 1572 he feloniously took and carried away a sheet to the value of four pence and a tablecloth to the value of four pence from Lancelot Kellet at Ely. Not guilty.

2. Thomas Wyllowes, [place of abode and occupation not stated], Robert Denes, [place of abode and occupation not stated] and Elizabeth Nicholson, spinster, [place of abode not stated], are freed and acquitted.

3. William Grounde of Whittlesey, labourer, is granted bail. William Stagus of Whittlesey, yeoman, and Thomas Gray of Whittlesey, gentleman, act as surety.

4. William Hodgson of Wisbech, husbandman, is bound to answer Robert Dalston in an action of debt. Anthony Edmunde of Sutton St James, Lincolnshire, husbandman, acts as surety.

5. Roger Hackman of Wisbech, labourer, is bound to answer Thomas Pierson in an action of trespass. Richard Clerke of Wisbech, yeoman, acts as surety.

6. Richard Warren of Aldreth, plough wright, is bound to answer Henry Dankyn in an action of trespass on the case. Thomas Phipers of Haddenham, yeoman, and Cuthbert Browne of Haddenham, yeoman, act as surety.

7. Thomas Phipers of Haddenham, yeoman, is bound to answer Henry Dankyn in an action of trespass on the case. Edward Browne of Haddenham, yeoman, and Cuthbert Browne of Haddenham, yeoman, act as surety.

8. Thomas Phipers of Haddenham, yeoman, is bound to answer Thomas Wrenn[er] esquire in an action of trespass. Edward Browne of Haddenham, yeoman, acts as surety.

9.John Clercke of Upwell, draper, is bound to answer William Daye in an action of debt. Richard Richardson of Upwell, draper, acts as surety.

11. John Clarke of Upwell, draper, is summoned to answer William Day, executor of the will of William Day of Wisbech, fishmonger, in an action of debt of 40 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 8 June [?1550] at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

12. William Sturmyn per his attorney complains against Roger Pynchebecke of Newton, yeoman, in an action of [trespass on the case] and breach of promise relating to the sale and supply, with a certain Thomas Walker of Tydd St Giles, butcher, of 60 stone of tallow, 19 Sept. 1572. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

13. Stephen Catell, alias Wright, of Somersham, Huntingdonshire, husbandman, answered William Mallerye esquire in an action of trespass and ejection that on 18 Apr. 1570 he ejected Mallerye from a marsh comprising 14 acres lying in [Cokesues] in Sutton which John Burges of Somersham, gentleman, had leased to Mallerye for a term which had not yet expired. Guilty; fined, to pay damages.

14. William Hodgeson of Wisbech, yeoman, answered Robert Dalton of [Hentton Ruse], gentleman, in an action of debt of seven pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 11 May 1569 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

15. Clement Ladd per his attorney complains against Robert Clyston that on 20 Apr. 1571 he entered the close and house of Clyston at Whittlesey, and took and led away three cows worth six pounds. Clyston fined; to pay damages.

16. Richard Cobbe complains against Edward Browne of Haddenham, husbandman, in an action of trespass and ejection that on 5 Feb. 1572 Browne ejected Cobbe from six measures or strips of land in a field called Grunty Fenfold in Haddenham which Andrew Perne, Master of Peterhouse, had leased to George Redman, who in turn had leased it to Richard Cobbe for a period of 40 years. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

17. Geoffrey Slater of Ely, currier, is summoned to answer Abraham Pinester of King’s Lynne, Norfolk, merchant in an action of debt of 20 marks relating to a bond of 12 Apr. 1571 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

18. Robert Ladde, [place of abode and occupation not stated], is summoned to answer Richard Sedgewicke in an action of debt relating to receipt of money between the Feast of Phillip and James the Apostles [1 May] 1565 and Easter day [22 Apr.] 1566. To proceed to jury trial.

19. Edward Love junior of Ely, shearman, answered Geoffrey Slater of Ely, currier, in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to a payment of 40 shillings, 10 Mar. 1568 at Sutton. To proceed to jury trial.

20. John Robyns, [place of abode and occupation not stated], answered Robert Payne in an action of trespass on the case that he [worked for] William Whyskyns esquire at the Manor of Brame [when in the service of Robert Payne]. Payne holds Robyns in breach of promise over a payment of ten pounds and two cows. Robyns fined; to pay damages.

21. John Curtop of Castle Hedingham, Essex, carpenter is summoned to answer William Burwell of Cambridge, vintner, in an action of debt of 49 pounds, six shillings and eight pence relating to a bond of obligation of 2 Sept. 1571 at Ely. Curtop fined; to pay damages.

22. Richard Pickarde of Sutton, husbandman, is summoned to answer Thomas Fosterr and Henry Fosterr of Sutton, husbandmen, in an action of debt of 80 pounds, 24 July 1571 at Sutton. The bond is recited. To proceed to jury trial.

23. William Savage, [place of abode and occupation not stated], answered Thomas Orynall in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to the bargain sale of all his title, interest and term of years relating to a messuage called [Maddyngleys] in Haddenham, 26 Sept. 1557. Savage requests leave to imparl.

24. Peter Lynge of Ely, yeoman, and Robert Lynge of Ely, ostler, answered William Stywarde, gentleman, in an action of trespass on the case that on 29 Nov. 1572 they entered the dwelling house of Stywarde at Ely and removed Margaret Adam from the custody of Stywarde. Stywarde had been under agreement with Henry Adam of Tydd St Mary and Thomas Adam of Tydd St Giles to educate and bring up their sister, Margaret. The Lynges request leave to imparl to the next session.

25. Thomas Peyrson per his attorney complains against Roger Hakeman of Wisbech, labourer, relating to the sale and supply of nine large knives [capknives] to the value of 60 shillings, seven large knives to the value of 100 shillings, five shears to the value of 20 shillings, five dagger blades to the value of 40 shillings, nine leather points to the value of 60 shillings and 1000 arrowheads to the value of 200 shillings, 5 Oct. 1572 at Wisbech. Hakeman fined.

26. Thomas Phipers of Haddenham, husbandman, John Hunt of Haddenham, yeoman, John Warde of Haddenham, husbandman, and John Bedall of Haddenham, labourer, answered Thomas Wrenn[er] esquire in an action of trespass that on 10 Apr. 1572 they entered Wrenn[er]’s close at Wilburton and ploughed nine acres of land lying in Gruntyfen Fold. Request leave to imparl to the next session.

27. Richard Upcher of Sutton, yeoman, Henry Blythe of Sutton, husbandman, and William Thomas of Sutton, husbandman, answered Richard Rande in an action of trespass that on 10 June 1572 they assaulted and imprisoned Rande at Sutton. Request leave to imparl to the next session.

28. Robert Clyston complains against Oswald Specheley in an action of trespass on the case that on 10 June 1564 he took and led away a gelding coloured black-grey to the value of 40 shillings. Specheley fined; to pay damages.

29. Richard Upcher of Sutton, yeoman, William Thomas of Sutton, husbandman, and Henry Blythe of Sutton, husbandman, answered Richard Rande in an action that they conspired between themselves to [say or accuse] Upcher of feloniously taking and carrying away three willow setts to the value of two pence and a half-penny leading Upcher to be arrested and imprisoned at Ely Barton, 20 Apr. 1571. Request leave to imparl to the next session.

30. Henry Dawkyn complains against Thomas Phipers in an action of trespass on the case that [on exact date not stated] he slandered Dawkyn calling him a false knave. Requests leave to imparl.
