Preamble: letters patent; writ of assizes; gaol delivery commission.

1. William Guye of Thetford, labourer, is indicted that on 31 Dec. 1594 he feloniously took and carried away two ducks worth two pence from Lancelot Daye and on 1 Feb. 1595 he feloniously took and carried away two ducks worth seven pence from Henry Goldston, both at Thetford. Not guilty.

2. Henry Johnson of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 3 Apr. 1595 he feloniously took and carried away five pecks of wheat to the value of five shillings from James Freeman at Ely. Not guilty.

3. John Anderson of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 29 July 1594 he feloniously took and carried away 500 turves [pieces of turf] from John Goddyn at Ely. Not guilty.

4. Simon Greene of Elm, labourer, is indicted that on 25 Dec. 1594 at about 11 o’clock at night he burgled the dwelling house of Robert Lynsey at Elm, assaulted Lynsey and feloniously took and carried away a cloak worth ten shillings, a [?hat or cap] worth three shillings and a table cloth worth two shillings. Guilty; to be hanged.

5. Elizabeth Harbote of Ely, spinster, is indicted that on 19 Oct. 1594 she took and carried away a purse containing eight shillings in numbered money belonging to John Greene from the person of Margaret Greene, his wife. Guilty; pled pregnancy.

6. Michael Hall of Wisbech, glover, is indicted that on 30 Mar. 1595 he feloniously took and carried away a clock to the value of six pence and two shirts to the value of five pence from William Samforde at Wisbech. Not guilty of stealing the shirts; guilty of stealing the cloak, to be whipped.

7. John Nelson of Stretham, labourer, is indicted that on 20 Dec. 1594 he feloniously took and drove a white ewe worth three shillings from Thomas Malyn at Stretham. Guilty; to be whipped.

8. Richard Reynolds of Chatteris, labourer, is indicted that on 2 Dec. 1593 he feloniously took and carried away a piece of black russet cloth to the value of 12 pence from William [?Enicklove] at Chatteris. Confessed; to be whipped.

9. Peter Greene of Wisbech, labourer, Edward Tappett of Wisbech, labourer, Elizabeth Twelves of Sutton, spinster, William Skewere of Ely, labourer, William Durrant of Ely, labourer, John Slegg of Ely, labourer, William Croxton of Ely, yeoman, William Smyth of Ely, labourer, Dorothy Vecter of Witchford, spinster, Francis Hopton of Wisbech, yeoman, and Thomas Hopton of Wisbech, yeoman, are freed and acquitted.

Roger Okelande of Ely, waterman, and Joan, his wife, answered Elizabeth Lambe, widow, in an action of trespass on the case that on 11 Apr. 1595 at Ely Joan publicly slandered Elizabeth by accusing her of stealing two pieces of bacon from Goodwife Brachet. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

11. Thomas Butler of Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, answered Clement Pilgrim in an action of trespass that on 12 Apr. 1595 he assaulted Pilgrim with arms. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

12. William Banckes of Ely, yeoman, is summoned to answer Richard Chambers in an action of debt and breach of promise relating to the sale of ten coombs of peas, 20 Dec. 1594. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

13. John Cole of Wisbech, yeoman, answered Thomas Tyesdale in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the sale of two ewes worth 20 shillings at Tydd St Giles, 20 July 1593. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

14. Edmund Thurkale of Wisbech, yeoman, answered Robert Paling in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the exchange of a bay horse and a white gelding, 30 July 1594 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

15. William Mynn of Wisbech, gentleman, answered John Butcher, gentleman, in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the sale of 24 acres of land lying in Leverington with oats growing there. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

17. Godfrey Warren of Newton, yeoman, answered William Drowe in an action of trespass that on 24 Mar. 1595 he broke and entered Drowe’s waresteads [a water-ford] at Newton Fen and took three nets worth ten shillings. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

18. William Bywater of Whittlesey, yeoman, alias William Bywater the son of Margery of Whittlesey, single man, is summoned to answered Ralph Crowe in an action of debt of four pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 15 Jan. 1594. To pay damages.

Agnes White of Wisbech, widow and administrator of the goods and chattels of Robert White lately of Guyhirn, Wisbech, husbandman, who died intestate, is summoned to answer Anthony Fysher in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 2 Nov. 1594 at Wisbech. White fined; to pay damages.

21. John Garner of Tydd St Giles, husbandman, is summoned to answer [Beele] Bilsbye in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 1 Jan. 1592 at Tydd St Giles. Garner fined; to pay damages.

22. John Butcher of Newton, gentleman, is summoned to answer Anthony Irby esquire in an action of debt of four pounds relating to the rent and lease of 24 acres of land in Leverington called [Les Fals], 1 Nov. 1593. To pay damages.

23. Thomas Basse of Ely, husbandman, is summoned to answer Giles Arkynstall, gentleman, in an action of debt of 12 pounds, 25 Mar. 1594 at Ely. Basse to pay damages.

24. Agnes White of Wisbech, widow and administrator of the goods and chattels of Robert White lately of Guyhirn, Wisbech, yeoman, who died intestate, is summoned to answer Thomas Whyte in an action of debt of 100 shillings relating to a bond of obligation of 22 Aug. 1591 at Guyhirn. White fined; to pay damages.

25. John Neale of Manea, husbandman, answered Christopher Crabb in an action of trespass that on 5 May 1594 he took a horse and two mare colts from a marsh called Westmore at Littleport. To pay costs and damages at the next session.

Lawrence Barnes of Haddenham, bricklayer, and John Barnes of Haddenham, bricklayer, answered John Rose in an action of trespass on the case relating to the construction of a double brick chimney to detailed specifications at Rose’s house in Chatteris, 24 Mar. 1594. Lawrence and John arrested; to pay damages.

27. Peter Gibbs of March, labourer, answered Ralph Sheaparde in an action of trespass on the case relating to the sale of twenty hundredth of fother [fodder], 1 Sept. 1594 at March. [?Judgement is in favour of Sheaparde].

28. Richard Arter of Ely, chandler, is summoned to answer John Adlyn in an action of debt of four pounds relating to the sale of one barrel and one half firkin of [?soap]. Arter fined; to pay costs and damages.

29. Thomas Thomasyn of Parson’s Drove, yeoman, is summoned to answer Simon Thomasyn in an action of debt of 70 shillings, 30 Sept. 1593 at Parson’s Drove. Thomas Thomasyn is acquitted.

30. John Holmes, [place of abode and occupation not stated], is summoned to answer Thomas Whicke in an action of animal theft that on 26 Aug. 1594 he took a bay gelding worth 30 shillings from Whicke at Wisbech. Holmes fined; to pay damages.

31. William Goldwell of Upwell, Norfolk, yeoman, is summoned to answer John Wright in an action of debt of 18 pounds according to an obligation of 19 July 1591 at Wisbech. Goldwell fined; to pay damages.

32. William Baxter of Witchford, labourer, is indicted that on 28 Aug. 1595 he feloniously took and carried away a woman’s gown worth two shillings from William Melborne at Witchford. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.

33. John Kepegate of Witchford, labourer, is indicted that on 4 July 1595 he feloniously took and carried away a frieze jerkin worth eight pence, a doublet worth 12 pence and a pair of breeches worth 12 pence from George Branthwayte at Witchford. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.

34. William Christopher of Whittlesey, labourer, and John Gedney of Whittlesey, labourer, are indicted that on 3 May 1595 they feloniously took and carried away 60 sedge sheaves to the value of eight pence from [?Brice] Darley at Whittlesey. Not guilty.

35. Robert Atkynson of Wisbech, labourer, and Nicholas Thomas of Wisbech, labourer, are indicted that on 21 June 1595 they feloniously took and carried away 40 sedge sheaves to the value of three shillings from Thomas Swayne at Wisbech. Not guilty.

36. Robert Lynn of Wilburton, labourer, and Hugh Spencer of Wilburton, labourer, are indicted that on 28 Dec. 1594 they feloniously took and carried away a bushel of peass worth 11 pence from Edward Olyver and Thomas Saunders at Wilburton. Lynn confessed, Spencer guilty; both to be whipped.

37. Thomas Symon of Ely, labourer, answered John Fowler in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to a debt of five pounds, six shillings and eight pence with Thomas Maron of Ely, labourer, 25 May 1595 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

38. William Simkyng of Witchford, husbandman, answered William Cotton in an action of trespass on the case relating to a licence to lease a messuage in Witchford and an exchange of money, 5 Jan. 1595 at Witchford. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

James Bartram of Whittlesey St Mary, weaver, and Griselda, his wife, answered William Addyson in an action of trespass on the case relating to the lease of a tenement without a cottage, half an acre of land with buildings and a hovel [an outhouse] in Whittlsey, 25 Mar. 1593. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

40. Christopher Hawkes of Sutton, husbandman, is summoned to answer Walter Agarde and Richard Fielde in an action of debt of 20 pounds and breach of promise relating to the sale of various quantities of cloth and canvas. Hawkes fined; to pay damages.

41. Christopher Hawkes of Sutton, husbandman, answered John Petchy in an action of debt of five pounds and four shillings relating to the sale of three pieces of woollen cloth, 20 Oct. 1593 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

43. Thomas Pigeon of Ely, gentleman, is summoned to answer Benjamin Gibson in an action of debt of 100 shillings relating to the sale of five milk cows, 30 Mar. 1595 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

44. William Totnham of Wentworth, husbandman, answered William Adam esquire in an action of trespass relating to William Hawkers’ tenancy of two acres of arable land with appurtenances in Wentworth, 10 Aug. 1594. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

45. Ambrose Smyth of Lidgate, Suffolk, yeoman, is summoned to answer Joan Holland, widow, in an action of debt of 60 pounds relating to a messuage and seven acres of land with appurtenances in Witchford. Smyth guilty.

46. William Lambe of Wisbech, blacksmith, answered John Fyncham, gentleman, in an action of trespass that on 1 Nov. 1594 he broke and entered Fyncham’s close and dwelling house at a place called Ship Lane in Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

47. Lawrence Barnes of Haddenham, bricklayer, answered Andrew Papworth in an action of trespass that on 6 Nov. 1594 his livestock trampled and overgrazed the grass growing in Papworth’s close, called Watson’s Yard, at Haddenham causing damage. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

48. Richard Roberts of Mepal, labourer, answered David Ayres in an action of trespass that on 20 Oct. 1595 he took and carried away a [cloak] from Ayres to the value of 40 shillings. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

49. Thomas Pygeon of Ely, gentleman, answered William Wilkes in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to a debt of three pounds, three shillings and four pence with a certain William Cooper of Ely, maltster, 10 June 1595. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

50. John Foster of Ely, baker, answered Thomas Frenche in an action of trespass that on 8 Aug. 1595 he took and carried away fish, namely pickerels, roaches and perches, to the value of ten pounds from his fishpond at a place called Pickwillowe in Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

51. Henry Milksopp of Littleport, yeoman, answered Thomas Frenche in an action of trespass that on 10 Aug. 1595 he took and carried away 200 pickerels and 300 roaches to the value of ten pounds from his fishpond at a place called Welny Water at Littleport. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

52. Richard Crabb of Littleport, gentleman, answered Thomas Frenche in an action of trespass that on 18 Aug. 1595 he took and carried away 200 pickerels, 300 roaches and 100 perches to the value of ten pounds from his fishpond at a place called Welny Water at Littleport. Crabb arrested; to pay damages.

54. Richard Garlopp of Doddington, miller, answered Geoffrey Cocker in an action of trespass that on 26 Mar. 1595 he forcibly broke and entered the close and house of Cocker at Doddington. Not guilty; Cocker fined for making a false claim.

55. John Pypers of Coveney, husbandman, answered Henry Harding in an action of trespass that on 24 July 1595 he broke and entered Harding’s cottage and close at Coveney. Not guilty; Harding fined for making a false claim.

56. Roger Coe of Leverington, gentleman, answered Francis Curson in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the [medical] treatment of Robert Dennyson and George Dennyson, 25 May 1595 at Leverington. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

William Wright of Littleport, labourer, and Thomas Doughton of Littleport, labourer, answered Richard Crabb in an action of trespass that on 23 June 1595 they took three [?pickerels or pikes] from Crabb’s nets to the value of 40 shillings at a marsh called Cannowle. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

60. William Annyson of Leverington, husbandman, is summoned to answer Thomas Maddy, gentleman, in an action of debt of 80 shillings relating to the lease of 19 acres of land with appurtenances in Leverington, 30 Mar. 1594. Annyson is fined.

62. Robert Stanfield of Leverington, labourer, is summoned to answer John Rawlyng in an action of debt of six pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 19 Oct. 1594. Stanfield fined.

63. Bernard Carre of March, [aquavite] seller, is summoned to answer Francis Pynn in an action of debt of 11 pounds, eight shillings and four pence relating to a bond of obligation of 23 Nov. 1594 at Wisbech. Carre fined; to pay damages.

65. Richard Cully of Elm, labourer, answered Peter Greene in action of trespass that on 1 Aug. 1594 his livestock trampled and overgrazed grass growing in Greene’s close at Elm at a place called Wales Field causing damage. To pay costs and damages.

66. Richard Cully of Elm, labourer, answered William Makindor in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the sale of a [felt cap] and the exchange of a quantity of fother, 1 Sept. 1594 at Elm. To pay costs and damages.

67. John Cherye of Elm, labourer, answered William Makendor in an action of trespass that on 18 Feb. 1595 he broke and entered the close of Makendor at Elm and took away five cart-loads of hay worth 100 shillings. To pay costs and damages.

68. William Nicholas of Outwell, yeoman, is summoned to answer John Cambridge in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 25 Jan. 1594 at Outwell. Nicholas is fined.

69. Robert Diggon of Littleport, waterman, is summoned to answer Jerome Syme in an action of debt of seven pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 9 Oct. 1595 at Littleport. Diggon is fined.

70. Thomas Clarke of Littleport, husbandman, is summoned to answer Jerome Syme in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 7 Mar. 1595 at Littleport. Clarke fined.

71. Richard Mann of Upwell, husbandman, answered John Elveston in an action of trespass that on 23 Oct. 1594 he assaulted Elveston at Upwell. Mann arrested; to pay damages.

72. Edward Phipers of Haddenham, yeoman, is summoned to answer John Kyrkes in an action of debt of 100 marks relating to a bond of obligation of 10 May 1595 at Haddenham. The bond of obligation is recited. To pay costs and damages [at the next session].

75. Edward Phipers, [place of abode and occupation not stated], is summoned to answer William Gooday in an action of animal theft that on 8 June 1595 he took 120 and 80 ewes from a field in Haddenham. There is discussion of the place and ownership of various pieces of land. Phipers is fined.
