J. S. Login, when on a political mission in Herat, in 1839-40, commissioned a mullā to translate a Persian tract into Judaeo-Persian. Finding the mullā both competent and interested he then determined to transcribe the New Testament, and work began with Hebrews. Work continued until February 1841, when Login had to leave Herat. He took the completed portions to Kabul and after two months there two mullās arrived from Bokhara, who were related to the mullā at Herat. One of them - "Moolah Moosa" - was able to complete the transcription, which he did after Login had left Kabul. The completed MS was forwarded to him in February 1842. The Gospels were published London: BFBS, 1847 (DM 7365) under the supervision of Edwin Norris of the Royal Asiatic Society.
