Scope and Contents

ff.94; 325 x 200mm; paper, unbound. Written throughout in Platt’s own handwriting.

1. (ff.1-60) Collation made by Thomas Pell Platt, of the Ethiopic texts of St. John’s Gospel contained in the Polyglot, and in Cambridge MS Oo.1.41 (no. III in E. Ullendorff and S. Wright, ‘Catalogue of Ethiopian manuscripts in the Cambridge University Library’, Cambridge, 1961), entitled ‘De codice MSto Cantabrigiensi Evang. S. Yohannis Aethiopice’. f.2 is blank, ff.3-8 contain observations on orthography etc. and ff.9-60 the collation. The notes throughout are in Latin, and most of the folios are blank verso.

2. (ff.61-94) Notes, made by Thomas Pell Platt and sent to J. Jowett, concerning ‘corrections’ made to the printed version of the Psalms in Amharic, mostly arranged in 3 columns, ‘Translation of the MS Amharic version’. ‘Translation of Mr. Platt’s correction’, ‘Remarks’. The material is in English, and was sent in instalments to Jowett. The divisions of the material are as follows:

a) ff.61-64 are dated July 9th, 1832.

b) ff.65-67 contain corrections and a letter to Jowett dated Aug. 1st, 1832, concerning problems about the editing of the corrections.

c) ff.68-73.

d) ff.74-77, including a letter dated Jan. 8th, 1832.

e) ff.78-80.

f) ff.81-84, dated Mar. 3rd, 1833.

g) ff.85-86, dated Mar. 19 (1833).

h) ff.87-88.

i) ff.89-92, dated April 23rd, 1833.

j) ff.93, notes on doubtful passages

k) ff.94, letter from T. P. Platt at Childs Hill, Hampstead, dated April 23rd, 1833, to the Rev. Jos. Jowett, 10 Earl Street, Blackfriars, saying that he had overlooked the matter of the titles to the Psalms.
