Gospels, 1239

 Series
Reference Code: GBR/0374/BFBS/BSMS 77

Scope and Contents

ff.III + 230 +III (endpapers added at the time of the last rebinding), 230 x 125mm; text sixe 195 x 120mm; two columns of 27 lines.
Decorated with a wooden cross fixed to a decorated metal panel on the front and another decorated panel on the back cover. The front panel is surrounded by coloured glass set as individual stones. On the four ends of the cross are medallions representing four events from the Gospels: Resurrection (top); Crucifixion (bottom); Baptism (left) and Annunciation (right). Chased into the corners of the metal panels are another four medallions, each bearing one of the symbols of the Evangelists (St. Matthew, a man; St. Mark, a lion; St. Luke, an ox; St. John, an eagle). The back cover represents Mary, Mother of God with the Child who is holding a globe in his hand. An inscription on the cover reads: "Bible. The Red Holy Gospel". It is possible that the binding is of East European, possibly Polish, origin.
Collation: the MS is too tightly bound to be properly collated, but St. Matthew begins on f.8 verso; St. Mark on f.69 verso; St. Luke on f.109 verso and St. John on f.179 verso. There are colophons on ff.6 verso; 69 recto; 177 verso; 178 recto; and 229 verso and 230 verso. The paper has been ruled by hard point and threads have been sewn in outer margins to provide a "thumb-index". Written in a neat bolorgir (round hand), the manuscript has on f.7 verso a full colour portrait of Christ, blessing, sitting on a cushion with a red book (the Gospels) in His left hand. The four Evangelists are below, almost as supporters. Full colour portraits of the four Evangelists precede their books, headpiece decorations at the beginning of each Gospel (ff.8 verso; 69 verso, 109 verso; 179 recto). On ff.1 verso-6 recto there are gate and pillar motifs executed in purple ink; ff.6 verso-7 recto has arabesques, f.9 recto a gate, a cross and birds and ff.48 verso-49 recto buildings in the same ink. Initials are in red ink.
The first colophon identifies the scribe as Partagh, son of the priest Nahabed. The second colophon states that the manuscript was renewed and rebound by Stephanos, the priest who was commissioned by Lianos, also a priest, as a memorial to himself, his parents, his deceased brother, his "immature lad Parsegh and my spiritual father and master Simon" and all other near relatives living or dead. This work was completed in the Armenian date 876, i.e. 1427 A.D. Two further, short, colophons record subsequent owners in 1502 A.D. and 1910 A.D.
A black and white photograph of ff.69 verso-70 recto appears between pp.30 & 31 in the printed catalogue ("Historical Catalogue of the Manuscripts of Bible House Library", Falivene & Jesson, BFBS: 1982).
