Scope and Contents

ff.III + 127 + I; 182 x 129mm; text size a) 145 x 100mm, b) ff.117-127 135 x 80mm; a) has 14 lines, b) has 13 lines in two columns. Red leather binding.
Collation: 1(6), ff.1 and 6 verso blank; 2 (10), f.7 recto blank; 3-6(8); 7(6), ff.52 verso-54 blank; 8-13(8); 14(6), ff.105 verso-109 recto blank; 15-16(8), ff.117 recto blank; 17(2) + 1 after 2 (f.127). The main text is on white paper with ff.117-127 being on dark smooth paper. The preliminary matter is on a dark rough paper, used as strengthening. The manuscript has very little decoration, the main feature being red-ink headings in ff.117-127, and there are occasional marginalia.
The volume contains six tracts:
i. ff.3 verso-6 recto: Munyat al-musalli wa-ghumyat al-mubtadi'. An incomplete copy of the well-known treatise by Sadīd al-Dīn al Kashgarī on the ordinances relating to ablution and prayer according to the Hanafi school. Arabic.
ii. ff.7 verso-46 recto: Ta'līm as-sibayān (i.e. the instruction of youths) by Mulla 'Abd Allāh. A tract on ethical and legal points specifically for men to learn and teach children. Persian.
iii. ff.49 verso-55 recto: The first part of an abridgement entitles Khulāsah of Fiqh-I Kaydani, written by Sa'd ad-Dīn Sharaf, a teacher in Jāmi' Masjid at Panūr. The subject of this tract is the rites of prayer according to the Hanafi school of Islamic law and it was copied by the scribe Darvīsh Pīr Muhammad Kahkah who completed his work on the fifth day of Muharram, 1259 A.H. Persian.
iv. ff.104 verso-105 recto: An extract or compilation from one or more works on Islamic law (fiqh), discussing the legal position on indicating with the index finger whilst pronouncing the profession of faith (sahādah). Persian.
v. ff.109 verso-116 verso: An excerpt from a probably Hanafi fiqh on the manner of slaughtering animals, together with, on the last page an anecdote about the early Sufi "Ibrahim Dahām", i.e. Ibrahim ibn Adham, entitles Fasl dar bayān-i sunnat-i zabh.
vi. ff.117 verso-127 verso: Najāt al-mu'minīn, i.e. a short didactic poem on essential religious knowledge, but not the work of the same title by Ilahi-Bakhsh Barākarī. The author of this poem is unknown. Urdu.
