Biographical / Historical

The Danish Bible Society was founded in 1814, but effectively severed its connections with the BFBS after the Apocrypha controversy (1825-26). The BFBS was prevented at first from operating in Denmark because the Royal Orphan House in Copenhagen had a monopoly of printing the Danish Bible. In 1855 the Orphan House agreed to produce an edition of the New Testament for the Society without notes or references to the Apocrypha, and an Agency Committee was set up to arrange for its distribution. In 1865 the Society’s work was extended and it negotiated further concessions on the printing and importing of Bibles (previously banned), but this created some competition and friction with the work of the Danish BS. By the start of the 1890’s the Society was considering withdrawing from Denmark, provided it could persuade the Danish BS to issue editions without the Apocrypha, to satisfy the non-Lutheran churches. In 1890 Irenaeus Ravn was appointed Agent with a Consultative Committee to assist him in his work, part of the function of which was to encourage cooperation with the Danish BS. In 1894 the Society agreed in principle that the Danish BS should publish some editions without the Apocrypha. The Consultative Committee disbanded in May 1895, following the death of Ravn early that year, and the Danish Bible Society proceeded to take over the work.
