Platt's History, 1827 - 1846-05
Scope and Contents
As a result of criticism of the Society’s translations during the Apocrypha Controversy, Platt undertook the preparation of a history of the Society’s translations, which he presented to the Committee in Aug. 1829. Each volume contains several accounts of translations, separately paginated. Each account begins with brief notes on the language and early Bible translations into it, but most of the text is taken up by a detailed account of the Society's work in each language. The main text was written by a clerk on the rectos, and additions and alterations, sometimes in Platt’s hand, were written on the versos. Occasionally extra pages have been stuck in. Some material has been cut out from the annual Reports and pasted in, instead of being copied. Letters and committee minutes are transcribed in full, and sometimes preserve texts that are no longer extant. In addition to the volumes, there are also working papers and other related material, including extracts of minutes and a list of letters and documents taken from the main correspondence series. The history was never published.
