Biographical / Historical

The "Home Organisation Department" began in 1888 with the appointment of a Home Superintendent. As it inherited some of the functions of the Agency Department, whose clerk kept registers of the Auxiliary Bible Societies in the UK, some of its records go back as far as ca 1825.The Department continued to grow, notably under the leadership of W.J. Platt during the 1930s and 1940s. It was renamed the Home Department ca 1939. Specialised sub-sections of the Department dealt with Women's Work and Youth Work. The records of the Department survive in a fragmented form; those created after 1939 were filed largely on a subject basis rather than continuing the pre-1939 series of records.
