Smithson has pencilled '22/2' next to the following notes: '14. Tho' apparently far away from civilization yet reminded unexpectedly by sewing machine. Usual mode of getting to Apia by Kawwan 40 tons only - leaving at 5 p.m. but as it there was a rumour that U.S.N.Z. boat to call Kawwan was to leave at 3. However Haurots arrived 1.30 - Kawwan 5. Weird scene on deck native sleeping'.
