Scope and Contents
Smithson has pencilled '20/10' next to the following notes: '3. As soon as our steamer is anchored it is surrounded with boats and canoes of all shapes and sizes containing natives anxious to sell all manner of curios etc. The scene is one which is almost as bewildering to the eye as to the ear, for dark skinned natives in the most varied costumes of varying colour chatter with one another endeavouring to drive bargains with the passengers English money or rather English prices being the rule - method of delivery - coin in'.
