Fijian lali in native town. A form of gong for summoning people together, 1880 - 1889
Scope and Contents
212 x 178 mm. A view taken at Bureta, Ovalau, showing a group of Fijians standing beside the ‘lali’ with village houses and hills in the background. The ‘lali’ consists of a hollowed–out wooden log which is beaten with a wooden mallet; formerly used to gather warriors to war, it is now only used to bring participants to feasts and other ceremonial occasions.
