New Caledonia War Dress, 1884 - 1885
Scope and Contents
51 x 93 mm. A full length studio portrait of a New Caledonian dressed in war regalia. All that is visible of the man are his arms and legs, his body being covered in a feather cloak and his head in an elaborate mask, probably also made of feathers or down and designed as a symbolic representation of a huge face. The spear he holds in his hand is similar to that of the Santa Chief in Y3089D/66 and the pictures are probably by the same unknown photographer. Behind the warrior is a painted scenic backdrop.
