King Tawhiao’s Wharepuni, Te Kuiti, King Country, 1884 - 1885
Scope and Contents
194 x 138 mm. An exterior view of the entrance of the assembly house, with a Maori woman standing in front. This famous house, built in the 1870s, was for many years the part time home of King Tawhiao and was built by carvers from many parts of King Country and the North. A very full description of the house is given in ‘Carved Maori Houses of Western and Northern Areas of New Zealand’, W.J. Phillips (Wellington, 1955). An interesting feature in this photograph is the use of a European door and window-piece among the rich Maori carving. In his 1885 expedition, Burton reached Te Kuiti at the beginning of June, when this photograph was taken.
