Runanga House (Hinemihi), Wairoa, 1885
Scope and Contents
202 x 145 mm. An interior view of a runanga, or assembly house, showing the rhythmical painted motifs on the rafters, the elaborately carved ancestor-panel at the rear of the house and carvings on the central supporting pole. This plate and Y3089D/11 were taken after Burton’s 1885 expedition at Wairoa and before the Tarawera eruption. After the disaster the house was dismantled and obtained by the Earl of Onslow, later being transported to Clandon Park, Surrey, where it now is. The house was built in about 1880.
