Port Chalmers, New Zealand, 1876
Scope and Contents
360 x 295 mm. A view from a hill overlooking the town, with Otago Harbour and Quarantine Island in the background. Although the town has been roughly laid out, it has still not grown to any great size, consisting mainly of small bungalows and gardens with a few larger houses here and there. In the foreground a small narrow gauge railway line can be seen, probably used in quarrying stone for roadmaking. It would be around the time this picture was probably taken (c. 1875) that Port Chalmers’ importance began to increase. A private railway line to Dunedin was completed in 1872, although it was not until 1882 that the Port sent its first consignment of frozen meat to the London market.
