The houses mainly consist of small wooden bungalows with larger buildings towards the centre of the town. The railway station can be seen near the beach. In the first half of the nineteenth century Oamaru, which lies on the east coast of Northern Otago, was mainly used as a landing place for whalers; the town itself began to develop in the early 1860s and the railway connection between Oamaru and Waitaki south was opened in September 1875.
