Wreck of the ‘S.S. Otago’ at Chasland’s Mistake, 1876
Scope and Contents
237 x 196 mm. A view showing the two masted steamship aground at low water, next to a large tree-covered rock. The ‘Otago’ left Dunedin on December 3rd 1876, bound for Melbourne, striking Chasland’s Mistake south of Nugget Point early on the morning of the 4th during foggy weather. No passengers were injured. This photograph is reproduced, with full details of the shipwreck, in ‘Shipwrecks, New Zealand Disasters 1795-1950’ by C.W.N. Ingram and P.O. Wheatley (Wellington, 1951).
