Chinese demonstrators outside Calgary City Hall 13 June 1983, 1983-06-13
Scope and Contents
The demonstration was caused by an application by Bradley Chapman, President of Continental Plaza Commercial Centre and Business Residence Ltd to turn the 91 unit Continental Plaza building into a hotel. The protesters claimed that the building had been used for low income Chinese housing and that its conversion to a hotel would deprive residents of their homes. Among the placards visible in the photograph are 'Together we will stop the hotel in Chinatown. Please give your support'; 'Site was for apartment, should remain as an apartment and not a hotel'; 'Senior citizens and children need protection' and 'Hotel threatens livelihood of over 20 families'. A cutting from the Calgary Herald is filed with the photographs.
