The photograph is captioned underneath: 'Mr Johnston, Mr Watson, Miss Talmage [?], Mr Toseland, Miss Miller, Mrs Van Dyck, Mr Rapalje [?], Miss Zweimer[?], Miss M. Talmage [?], Dr Fahony[?], Miss Green, Miss Johnston, Mrs Fahony[?], Miss Steele, Mr Sadler, Mrs Otte, Dr Kip, Mrs Macgowan, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Kip, Mr Wales, Mr Thompson, Cecil, Mrs Toseland, Mrs Howie, Dr Otte, Miss Capon, Mr Van Dyck. Taken by Dr Howie, Aug. 1892'. Eight are missionaries: Mr Wales, Mr Thompson, Mr Watson, Mrs Thompson, Cecil, Miss Johnston, Miss Green and Mrs Howie. Both Miss Talmage, Dr and Mrs Kip, and Dr and Mrs Otte were members of the American Reformed Mission at Amoy (Xiamen). In all likelihood, most members of the group are missionaries.
