The Sarawak Rangers, 1900
Scope and Contents
148 x 103 mm. View of the Sarawak Rangers on parade. The early history of this body is obscure: some sources give a date of 1862 for the formation of the Corps. In S. Baring-Gould and C.A. Bampfylde, ‘A history of Sarawak under its two White Rajahs 1839-1908 (London, 1909)’ p 376, however, it is stated that ‘the force was established in 1846 under a native officer of the Ceylon Rifles’. This discrepancy probably occurs since before 1872 the Rangers were known as the Sarawak Fortmen, an irregular force composed of locally recruited and untrained men. The Sarawak Rangers were disbanded in February 1932.
