The firm of Skeen & Co. made something of a speciality of pictorial and 'instantaneous' (viz., short exposures of around a second) views such as this, advertising from around 1880 pictures of 'The grandeur of the sea, breaking waves, and massive clouds, photographed instantaneously rendered with fine effect. These, with our MOONLIGHT SERIES, are studies in themselves' J. Ferguson's Ceylon almanac 1880-81, advert. pl. xx. This photograph is probably one of the series that was shown at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880 and favourably remarked upon.
