Nilgiris, ferns in jungle, 1901
Scope and Contents
An album containing prints measuring 69 x 95 mm, with handwritten captions. The captions have been used as titles and may contain offensive, inappropriate or outdated terms. They have been retained to reflect the context of the collection's creation. The flyleaf is inscribed 'To Lieut. Colonel G.S. Walker, I.M.S. with compliments and thanks from the photographer. 1901.'
George Lemon Walker (29.7.1849-31.5.1901) was born in Kingston, Ontario and served in the Madras Medical Service from 1876 until his death (from blood poisoning contracted after cutting himself while performing an operation at the Government General Hospital, Madras).
The photographs, of superior amateur quality, take in subjects from southern India (the majority) to Simla, with a few views from Australia and New Zealand. The subject matter concentrates on Indian architecture, people and scenery. There is no clue as to the identity of the photographer who was probably a colleague of Walker.
