The Vale of Kashmir seen under a cloud 1875, 1875-06 - 1875-07
Scope and Contents
Manuscript narrative of a two-month hunting expedition in June-July 1875 undertaken by three army officers 'under a cloud' as they travelled without official passes of the Kashmir Government, hence the pseudonyms of 'Colonel Jones' and 'Major Robinson'. The third, 'General Brown' did not complete the journey. 'Major Robinson' was Hubert Richard Lovett (1854-1908), then a Lieutenant in the 60th Rifles. They journeyed from Sialkot into the Pir Panjal range, along the Jhelum River and finished at Murree. The jocular narrative occupies 48 pages, and is followed by 'Six weeks in a French Vicarage by Hubert Richard Lovett' (19 pp.). Ten of the photographs are inserted in the former, the other in the latter. 1,2 and 4 relate directly to the expedition, 3 and 5-10 are purchased items from Frith's series.
