Banian tree, Barrackpore Park, 1860 - 1869
Scope and Contents
297 x 239 mm. Showing a European woman seated in the middle of the banian grove in Barrackpore Park. This lady is identified as Bourne's wife in one source (Clark Worswick, The last empire, (Aperture 1976) p. 60), but the authority for this statement is not given. As well as the banian grove which, formerly enclosed by shrubs, had been opened out by Lady Canning, the grounds at Barrackpore also contained a temple of fame, a menagerie and a gothic ruin (see following plate). Bourne no. 1748.
