Screen enclosing sarcophagi, in the interior of the Taj, 1860 - 1869
Scope and Contents
203 x 283 mm. View showing the screen of inlaid and pierced marblework surrounding the sarcophagi of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz-i-Mahal inside the Taj Mahal. The tombs themselves can be seen through the doorway in the screen although, as is usual in Indian sepulchres, the bodies themselves rest in a vault beneath plainer tombstones in the hall below. Bourne no. 1231. Duplicate at Y3022B/126.
