Jhula bridge across the Spiti River, between Dunkar and Mani, 1866
Scope and Contents
295 x 240 mm. View of a similar bridge to that seen in Y3022/C4, with a footpath leading up a steep scree covered hill on the farther side. Bourne's dark tent can be seen in the left foreground. Dr Playfair parted company with Bourne at Dunkar, the outpost of British territory in the area, and for the remainder of the expedition the photographer travelled without European company. The village of Mani was two miles further on from the bridge seen here, ‘[My way] led, first of all, down to the Spiti river, which I crossed on a most villainous bridge, made as usual of twisted twigs, and in such bad order that, near the centre, four feet of it was broken away. I had to scramble over as best I could, experiencing all the time the not very agreeable sensation that I, bridge, and all were being carried down the stream at a furious pace. This sensation arises from the motion of the torrent below, and from the feeling of insecurity engendered by such a slight and frail structure. After getting safely over I could afford to survey it calmly, and took a picture of it with the greatest composure’, (B.J.P., 14 January l870, p. 16).
