U.S. Club, Calcutta, 1918
Scope and Contents
211x147mm. View of the W. facade of the United Services Club at 29 Chowringhee Road at the junction with Kyd Street. The building rises to four storeys, with a central portion projecting out towards the street from the main range: this is surmounted by a small pediment on three Corinthian columns which run through the top two floors. On either side verandahs with Doric columns and pilasters, topped by a small central pediment, run round the upper storeys. The two lower floors are heavily rusticated. The club was founded as the Bengal Military Club in 1845, changing its name to the Bengal United Services Club in 1853. This building, which stands on the site of the original premises (a photograph of which is reproduced in Massey p.104), was erected in 1905, (Massey p.104). See also Y3022T/36.
