Old view of Chowringhee showing tanks opposite Lindsay Street and Bengal Club, 1867

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3022BB/10

Scope and Contents

290x192mm. View from the Ochterlony Monument looking S.E. across the Maidan and along Chowringhee Road. The tank opposite Lindsay Street (in foreground) is Monohor Das' Tank, the one beyond is the General's Tank. In the distance is St Paul's Cathedral. Although unsigned, the photograph is probably one of Samuel Bourne's panoramas, taken c.1867. The absence of the Outram statue at the junction of Park Street and Chowringhee (midway between the two tanks) certainly dates the photograph to before 1874, the year in which it was unveiled, (Massey p.96). Photograph probably by Samuel Bourne.
