View of Clive Street, looking N, 1915
Scope and Contents
287x202mm. View looking N. along Clive Street from the junction with Lyon's Range, towards the Eastern Bank at the further end of the street. In the right foreground at No. 1 Clive Street, looking more like government offices than commercial premises, is the headquarters of James Finlay & Co., a three storey building with a rusticated ground floor supporting a colonnade in the Corinthian Order running through two storeys. Above the main entrance the colonnade projects slightly to support a pediment. These buildings were erected for the firm in 1896. Established in Glasgow in 1750 as cotton spinners and weavers, the firm extended its operations to Europe and America, and in 1816 to India with an office in Bombay. The Calcutta office was opened in 1870. By the turn of the century the firm had large interests in jute and tea as wel as cotton, and became a limited company in 1909. For a history of the firm, see 'James Finlay and Company 1750-1950' (Glasgow, 1951). Beyond Finlay's is the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, and beyond that an open space where construction work is about to start on the Exchange Buildings. The plaque of the contractor, J.C. Banerjee, is visible above the fencing, (Massey p.85).
