'Bitter Fame' Material, 1975 - 1992
Scope and Contents
Three books, and four files of research material and other items, relating to Anne Stevenson's biography on Sylvia Plath, Bitter Fame, published in 1989. The following books are present:
1. Syvlia Plath: Letters Home - Correspondence 1950-1963, selected and edited by Aurelia Schober Plath, published 1975
2. A Closer Look at Ariel: A Memory of Sylvia Plath, written by Nancy Hunter Steiner, 1978 edition
3. Sylvia Plath Collected Poems, edited by Ted Hughes
Files MS Add.9451/20/7/4 to 6 are a mix of research material, composed primarily of photocopies of articles, newspaper cuttings, letters, and photographic images; and photocopies of reviews on Bitter Fame and other Sylvia Plath-orientated publications. File MS Add.9451/20/7/5 also has a press release, and pages from the first proof of the book.
The final file, MS Add.9451/20/7/7, holds a copy of Stevenson's response to an article written by Catherine Thompson, which argued that Plath was suffering from severe premenstrual syndrome. Stevenson states that she wishes she had had this article to draw upon when it came to forming her own view on Plath. This file also contains an issue of Poetry Review, Vol. 79 No. 4, which has a review of Bitter Fame by Lyndall Gordon. Accompanying this issue is a copy of Stevenson's response to the review.
