Scope and Contents

Two files holding letters sent to Anne Stevenson in connection to her work on the Sylvia Plath biography, Bitter Fame. The first file holds items dating between January and June 1987, while the contents of the second file date from July to December that year. Correspondents include representatives from Penguin Books, Olwyn Hughes, Peter Davison at the publisher, Houghton Mifflin; Lucas Myers, Richard Murphy, J. Melvin Woody, Clarissa Roche, and Trevor Thomas. The following are also present in the files: a copy of a memorandum of agreement between Stevenson and Penguin, a copy of an agreement between Stevenson and Houghton Mifflin, a letter of agreement between Olwyn Hughes and Stevenson, notes by Hughes on draft chapters, interview notes with Judith Flanders, James Michie, Suzette de Macedo, and Nicola Tyrer; and photocopies of correspondence between parties other than Stevenson.
