[Cecil John Rhodes (1853-1902)], 1880 - 1902
Scope and Contents
102 x 145 mm. Mounted on card. Three quarters full face view of the bust of Rhodes by Conrad Dressler. After amassing a fortune in the diamond mining industry at Kimberley and the formation of De Beers Consolidated Mines Company in 1888, Rhodes set about building his dream of a federal South African dominion under the rule of the British flag. He was instrumental in the founding of Rhodesia in 1890, but his plans were cut short when he was forced to resign the premiership of Cape Colony in 1896 after the abortive Jameson Raid of the previous year. This bust, described as 'a remarkable work' in (Brookner 1956), was presented to the Royal Colonial Institute by Sir James Blyth in 1905. It has since been disposed of. Photograph by Elliott and Fry.
