Cannon of Muhammed II, cast A.H. 868 (A.D. 1464): General View [1860s], 1860 - 1869
Scope and Contents
257 x 192 mm. General view of the two parts of the gun from the side. An accompanying letterpress reads: 'This great piece of ordnance formed part of the arsenal of the Castle of Asia at the mouth of the Dardanelles, and was presented to Her Majesty by Sultan Abdul Aziz Khan, 1866. It is now in the Museum of Artillery, Woolwich. Length, 17 feet; diameter of powder chamber, 10 inches; diameter of bore, 25 inches; weight, 18 tons 14 cwt 3 qrs. The stone shot each weigh 670 lbs nearly. An inscription near the vent states that the weight of the shot is 240 okes = 679 lbs, powder due 17½ okes = 49.5 lbs. Degrees, 3.'
