Scope and Contents

40 x 65 mm. (Vignetted oval). A carte de visite head and shoulders, three quarters profile studio portrait of the missionary and British official John Smith Moffatt C.M.G (1835-1918), the son of Robert Moffatt. Born at Kuruman, Moffat went to England in 1850 and was ordained and accepted by the L.M.S. in 1857. In the event however he returned to Africa as a freelance missionary and worked, with little success in Matabeleland and Inyati from 1868-63. He had rejoined the L.M.S. in 1864 and was stationed at Kuruman (1865-76) and Molepolole (1877-79). In 1879 he resigned from the L.M.S. and spent the rest of his career as a government official as: Native Commissioner, Zeerust 1880-81; Assistant Commissioner, Bechuanaland Protectorate 1887; British representative in Matabeleland 1888-92; and Assistant Commissioner, northern Bechuanaland 1892-96. In 1888 he negotiated the 'Moffatt Treaty' with Lobengula and was Congregational Minister at Vryburg 1905-06. The backmark reads: 'Elliott and Fry, 55 Baker Street, Portman Square, London, W. Number (the handwritten number '64351' is inserted here)'. Written in ink is the caption:'brother in law of Livingstone'.
