[Satinwood Bridge, Peradenia], 1867
Scope and Contents
209 x 158 mm. View looking along the Mahaweli Ganga towards the Satinwood Bridge, a structure 205 feet in length and constructed in a single arch formed by interlocking members of Satinwood and Millila. The graceful bridge was built under the superintendence of Colonel (later Lieutenant General) John Fraser in 1826-33. It was replaced by an iron structure in 1905, ‘of all the exquisitely artistic pictures we ever scanned one of finest is the landscape, (for such it is in the highest sense), in which the fine proportions of the Satin Wood Bridge are seen, between ranges of hills and masses of foliage with the waters of the river passing from deepest shade to gleaming light in the foreground’, (p. 13).
