View from Ballany [Hill], 1867
Scope and Contents
153 x 97 mm. View from the hillside looking down on the line which curves round on an embankment in the foreground before entering the deep rock cutting which leads to the mouth of the Meangalla Tunnel. 300 feet long and 18 feet broad, its construction was attended by several fatal accidents (see Ferguson, p. 9). On a spur of the hillside above the tunnel are the bungalows of Faviell and other staff. In the far distance is the peak of Utuwakanda, (Perera, ‘The Ceylon railway’, p. 95).
