Allagalla Viaduct, 1867
Scope and Contents
204 x 146 mm. Side view of the Allagalla Viaduct: ‘at 59.5 miles and about 1120 feet above sea-level - the Viaduct almost the only work of the kind on the line, being about 300 feet long, and consisting of 5 arches each 40 feet span by 45 in height. It is a well-finished picturesque piece of work, with its Incline and 20 chain curve, but the poor fellow, a Scotchman, who superintended the masons, died before its completion, from disease caught on the spot; of this well-executed viaduct of solid granite, Messrs Slinn & Co. took an exceedingly faithful picture before the wooden centreing was removed from the interior of the arches’, (p. 10).
