Kalany Bridge, 1867
Scope and Contents
209 x 155 mm. View looking across the Kalany River, 3 miles outside Colombo towards the iron railway bridge, an 800 foot structure on 8 screw piles and 12 brick piers, built at a cost of about £16,000. ‘Messrs. Slinn's photograph of the Railway Bridge across the Kalany is a fine picture characteristic of the rich foliage which lines the banks of the river and of the rafts which float on its bosom [in foreground], but unfortunately the effect is to convey the idea that the bridge runs parallel with, instead of across the stream. We suppose it is difficult to find a point whence a really profile view could be taken', (p. 6).
