Scope and Contents
The Charles Beard lectures were a series of eight lectures given at Ruskin College on some aspect of the history, or social and philosophical implications of science, sponsored by the Rationalist Press Association. Needham was invited to give the first set of lectures in 1948 but declined owing to his UNESCO commitments. They were instead delivered by J.D. Bernal and Needham gave the second series of lectures.
