Scope and Contents

This file contains material relating to Pitcairn, including summaries of the islands’ history, geography and population; the official letter from the Queen and newspaper cutting announcing Smedley’s appointment as Governor, with Smedley’s official message to islanders, 4, 18 February 1976; a report of Smedley’s visit, 14-17 May 1976; Smedley’s itinerary for a visit to the Cook Islands 19-20 May 1976; photocopy and original of ‘Cook Islands News’ with Smedley on front page, 20 May 1976; letter from Rev J.H. Newman, pastor of Seventh-day Adventist Church on Pitcairn; telegram to Smedley regarding local fracas in Pitcairn over coconut tree, 2 February 1978; two copies of ‘Pitcairn Miscellany’ pamphlet, vol.18, no.5, May 1976 and copies of vol. 24, nos. 3, 6 (May, June 1982); letter from G.D. Harraway (Pitcairn Islands Commissioner), 9 May 1983; bundle of correspondence and newspaper clippings from New Zealand newspapers relating to the Pitcairns 1982; letters from G.D. Harraway and Major Justin Fenwick regarding ships visiting Pitcairns,1980; T.D. O’Leary (High Commissioner, New Zealand, 1984-7) regarding possible visit of Ben Christian, the retiring Pitcairn Island Secretary, to the UK to visit the Queen (14 April 1987), with further letters relating to preparations for this visit, 8 and 13 May 1987; pressed leaves with paintings of flowers and greetings from Pitcairn; and brochures and postcards, five relating to Pitcairn and two of Tahiti (circa 200 sheets).
