Scope and Contents

This file of loose material accompanies the scrapbook RCMS 389/7/1. It contains a bundle of letters received by Smedley upon the announcement of his appointment as High Commissioner, Sri Lanka, from Alioune Badara M’Bengue (Senegalese ambassador), 29 November 1972; Sule D. Kolo (Nigerian ambassador), 30 November 1972; R.W. Katenga-Kaunda (Malawian ambassador), 16 November 1972; Sir Leckraz Teelock (Mauritian ambassador), 13 November 1972; Iyassu Mengesha (Ethiopian ambassador), 10 November 1972; G.M. Nhigula (Tazanian ambassador), 14 November 1972; Kaninda Mpumbua Tshingomba (Zairean ambassador), 27 November 1972; P.A. Carter (British High Commissioner, Mauritius), 7 November 1972; Martin Moynihan (British HC Liberia, 1970-3), 24 November 1972; Ian B. Watt (British HC Sierra Leone, 1972-6), 13 November 1972; and Gilbert Laithwaite, 17 November 1972.

It also includes correspondence between Smedley and Sir Bruce Greatbatch (British colonial governor of Seychelles, 1969-73); letter by Smedley to (Peter A.) Wilde (Deputy HC Sri Lanka, 1971-3); programme of consecration service of Colombo Cathedral, 7 November 1973; sermon preached by Bishop of Kurunegala in thanksgiving service, 2 February 1975; correspondence relating to Smedley’s connections with Sri Lanka Scout Association; programme of act of appointment of new Chief Mahanayaka Thero, 7 June 1975; documents dealing with expenditure on utilities, meals etc. in 1975; lists of locally engaged staff, 1975; lists of contacts in Sri Lanka (diplomatic service, academia and medicine), January 1974, October 1974, July 1975; programme of ‘The New Shakespeare Company’ in Colombo, 1975; printed order of service at St Andrew’s Church, Colombo, 30 November 1975; material relating to the Classical Association of Ceylon, 27 April 1973; and the Smedleys’ Sri Lanka driving license (circa 100 sheets).
