Scope and Contents

This is a full transcript of the original letters made by Le Fleming’s son Stephen, retaining the original spelling and punctuation, with editorial commentary provided in italics or square brackets. The document is illustrated with reproductions of postcards, family photographs and some of Le Fleming’s art work. It also incorporates notes and extracts of letters from Rosalind Le Fleming to her mother, Beatrice Mary Lees, which have been reproduced in small print.

Subjects include Le Fleming’s travel to Malaya and within the region for work and leisure; descriptions of his duties and colleagues at the FMSR in Ipoh and Kula Lumpur; friends and social life; painting and design; holidays in Europe; the Malay and Chinese people; Malaya’s landscape, butterflies, botany and wildlife; training with the FMS Volunteer forces; and the deteriorating international situation leading to the Second World War (221 pages).
