Biographical / Historical

Algernon Talmage (1871-1939), R.A., painted 'The founding of Australia' in 1937 for Frank Albert of Sydney, who presented it to the Tate Gallery. The idea for the painting was suggested by D. Hope Johnston, who also provided Talmage with background information. The painting was exhibited in the Royal Academy's exhibition of 1937. At the request of the Governor of New South Wales, it was sent by the Trustees of the Tate Gallery to Sydney, Australia, and exhibited during the Sesqui-Centenary in 1938.
