Scope and Contents

A typescript 'survey of alleged likenesses of the navigator and discoverer in the Royal Commonwealth Society and elsewhere 1965', 17 pages and 4 attached photographs and portraits. The paper is concerned chiefly with the full-length portrait of Tasman in the R.C.S. and the family group in the National Library of Australia. It is accompanied by related correspondence, 1893-1976; eighteen loose photographs of Tasman and members of his family; and a few notes and press cuttings. There is also a copy of 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 52, April 1961, including the article 'The problem of Tasman's portraits' (pp. 1-3), which contains a summary of the first draft of the typescript.

Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603-1659) discovered Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and New Zealand during an expedition of 1642-1643.
