Biographical / Historical
Arthur Frederick Richards was educated at Clifton College and Christ Church, Oxford, and entered the Malayan civil service in 1908. He proved to be a proficient administer, serving as under-secretary to the government of the Federated Malay States, adviser to the government of Johore and governor of North Borneo between 1926 and 1932. He was appointed governor of Gambia in 1933. He next served as governor of Fiji and high commissioner for the Western Pacific before being appointed governor of Jamaica in 1938, a post he occupied until 1943.
