Biographical / Historical
Sir Robert Calder (1745-1818) entered the navy in 1759, and commanded ships on the home station, 1780-1783. He was made Captain of the Fleet in the Mediterranean in 1796, and fought at the battle of St Vincent in 1797, the year he was knighted. He was created Baronet in 1798, and Rear-Admiral in 1799. He was recalled and censured after failing to engage Villeneuve's fleet off Finisterre in July 1805. This marked the end of his active service, although he was made Admiral in 1810. Calder died on 31 August 1818.
