Biographical / Historical

William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950) was born in Ontario on 17 December 1874. He attended the Universities of Toronto and Harvard, and was Deputy Minister of the Canadian Labour Department, 1900-1908. He was an M.P., 1908-1911, and Director of Industrial Research at the Rockefeller Foundation, 1914-1918. He became leader of the Liberal Party in 1919, and was Prime Minister, 1921-1930 and 1935-1948, and Minister for External Affairs, 1921-1930... and 1935-1946. In 1940 he signed the Ogdensburg Agreement with President Roosevelt on joint defence, and in 1941 agreed the Hyde Park Declaration for the closer integration of the Canadian and American economies. His championing of Canadian independence bore fruit in the Canadian Citizenship Act in 1946. He retired in 1948, and died on 22 July 1950 at his home Kingsmere, near Ottawa.
