Scope and Contents
An illuminated invitation from the Cartier Centenary Committee to the Royal Colonial Institute inviting the Institute to send representatives to the inauguration of a memorial to Sir George Etienne Cartier at Montreal on 7 September 1914. The invitation includes the crest of the R.C.I.

Biographical / Historical
Sir George Etienne Cartier (1814-1873), Canadian statesman, was born on 6 September 1814 at St Antoine, county of Verchères, Lower Canada, and attended the College of St Sulpice, Montreal. He became a member of the bar in Lower Canada in 1835, and a member of the legislative assembly for Verchères in 1848. He was made Attorney-General for Lower Canada in 1856, and was a leading member of the cabinet, 1857-1858. He was Premier, 1858-1862, Attorney-General, 1864-1867, and Minister of Militia, 1867-1873. Cartier was created baron in 1868. He died in London on 21 May 1873.
