Biographical / Historical

Archibald Ross Colquhoun (1848-1914), explorer, was born in March 1848 off the Cape of Good Hope, and educated in Scotland and on the continent. He joined the Indian Public Works Department in 1871, and was secretary and second-in-command of the Government Mission to Siam and Siamese Shan States in 1879. He explored the best route for a railway between Burmah and China, 1881-1882, and was correspondent for 'The Times' during the Franco-Chinese War and in the Far East, 1883-1884. Colquhoun was Deputy-Commissioner, Upper Burmah, 1885-1889, and after travelling with the Pioneer Force to South Africa he was Adminstrator of Mashonaland, 1890-1892. He retired in 1894, and in subsequent years travelled throughout South-East and East Asia, the Americas and South Africa. His 'Greater America' was published in 1904. He died on 18 December 1914.
